What the bomb will do
A nuclear bomb will do exactly what everyone pictures. I have driven through cities that size a hundred times. And then it will be over. The explosion lasts seconds. It happens where it happens, and the rest of the country, the rest of us, will still be standing there, alive, looking at the sky.
That is the part we survive. It is also the part that scares me the least.
Fifteen minutes
Because after a nuclear detonation, you only have about fifteen minutes before the nuclear fallout starts settling. That is how long the radioactive dust the bomb blasted into the sky takes to start coming back down.

What I would have been doing
I know exactly what I would have been doing in those fifteen minutes before I read any of this. Standing in the yard. Trying to call people. Trying to figure out what just happened.
Most people will be doing the same thing. Panicking, confused, breathing.
You cannot see it
The fallout is invisible. No color, no smell, nothing you can feel.
Every breath puts radioactive particles into your lungs, and it does not matter how far you are from the blast. The wind carries the poisonous fallout hundreds of miles, over every town in its path, and it comes down on the yard you are standing in.

The other thing the plan made me understand is that nobody is coming with anything. The trucks stop the day it happens. The stores are empty within the hour. The drivers are breathing the same air as everyone else.
